The beginning of a visual survey of the nine cities and six counties that make up Hampton Roads between 2011 and 2012 in order to create an historical document of the time in this region. My own personal connection to the region and images from my family will be a thread throughout the essay.

I plan to seek to identify the qualities of each city, to tell the stories of the residents of this region and also to explore my roots through the eyes of my own family. The overarching theme is that while each of these cities has its own unique characteristics that together they make up something much greater than the sum of its parts.
